Introduction to Australian Culture: Tim Tam Slam

Tim Tams are an important part of the daily life of most Australians. I am yet to find a Norwegian version but I am looking. Basically a Tim Tam consists of two chocolate biscuits, stuck one atop t'other with chocolate cream, and covered in chocolate.

They are "Australia’s favourite chocolate biscuit. Around 35 million packs are sold each year - that's nearly 400 million biscuits. [...] Tim Tam biscuits first hit supermarket shelves in 1964. They were named after a horse that won the Kentucky Derby in 1958. A member of the Arnott family, Ross Arnott, attended the race day and decided ‘Tim Tam’ was the perfect name for his new biscuit. The chocolate used to make Tim Tam biscuits has been specially developed by Arnott’s to give a slightly caramel taste. The cream flavour is a delicate mixture of vanilla, butter and chocolate that complements the biscuit base and the chocolate. It’s this unique cream which sets Tim Tam apart from any other chocolate biscuit" [source: http://www.arnotts.com.au/products/TimTam.aspx]

The best way to eat a Tim Tam is known as the TimTam Slam as seen demonstrated by Roxane and I in the pictures above.

1. Nibble off two opposite corners of the Tim Tam

2. Use the Tim Tam as a straw to suck up coffee (or tea, or hot chocolate).

3. Timing is crucial here. You need to wait long enough for the Tim Tam to be almost melted; but not so long that it does melt and drops into the bottom of your coffee. Eat Tim Tam.

And there you have it!

Incidentally, I am out of Tim Tams. :-(

Out of Tim Tams! Oh No! Well...may i be cheeky and propose a trans-continental trade? I've been wanting to try these norwegian things called 'Smash!' - cone shaped chocolate dipped corn chips - maybe we could swap! Do you prefer the original milk-chocolate Tim Tams, or the new-fangled flavoured ones? (is that a silly question?)

Yes! You're totally on. I'm intriged by this "Smash" (you are more learned on Norwegian food than me!)- I haven't seen any yet but i shall hit the stores and see what i can find!
And yes, definitely the original flavour, none of that new-fangled garbage.
Yippee! I shall get on to this Smash project ASAP. Thanks Em!

Yay! When I first heard about these I didn't imagine in a million years I'd actually KNOW someone in Norway who I could squeeze for samples. I don't really know about Norwegian cuisine - all I've tried is Gjetost - and it all comes from the Norwegian page of my favourite foodie blog, The Traveler's Lunchbox. Sorry I'm not tricky enough to link it, but hopefully you'll find it and get some inspiration as to where to start with Norwegian food....although personally I might skip the tubed caviar...ick!

yep flygirl that can be arranged - incidentally i'm also out of VEGEMITE, would really appreciate a traveller's pack of that! :)

I'll get you guys a collection of stuff that travels (you probably don't want a care package of brown cheese, and jam might also be problematic to send but i'll see what i can do)!

Incidentally, all parcels with value over 200kr are TAXED here - i had to PAY to receive two ebay parcels i'd already paid for! 200kr = just under $50 so def shouldn't be an issue - but just in case please under value the parcel! And make sure you fill in the customs dec in full detail cos i got charged for that too (grr).

Em directed me to the Oslo Foodies so i saw it once, didn't know she closed it though! that's a shame. Good work for saving it! :)
